A 13-year-old girl was taken into protective custody in Nebraska following a high speed car chase with police.

Nebraska State Patrol issued a statement about the incident on Tuesday. Troopers were pursuing the girl—who had an 11-year-old boy with her—as she at times drove over 100 miles per hour for approximately 16 minutes throughout central Nebraska.

The incident happened on Monday night at around 9:30 p.m. local time. A trooper saw someone driving a Nissan Pathfinder at about 35 mph on the eastbound side of I-80. When the trooper tried to stop the vehicle, the driver of the Pathfinder reportedly started accelerating and drove off.

“The vehicle reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour as it fled eastbound on I-80,” the Nebraska State Patrol’s statement said. “Another trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks at mile marker 288 to slow the vehicle. The suspect vehicle then exited I-80 at the Shelton interchange and began traveling northbound at slower speeds.”

The girl is from Colorado, as was the 11-year-old, who was riding in the passenger seat. Both were apprehended by police “without further incident” after another trooper successfully stopped the Pathfinder using a “tactical vehicle intervention.” Authorities discovered a small amount of cannabis in the car and drug paraphernalia, as well as a firearm.

In addition to Nebraska State Troopers, cops from the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office and Shelton Police Department assisted. In neither Nebraska nor Colorado are children under the age of 15 allowed to operate a vehicle by themselves and without a permit.
