A man has been charged with assaulting the former UK Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, following an incident which took place on a London Underground train.

“A 61-year-old man has been charged in connection to a man being assaulted and harassed at Westminster station on 24 January,” British Transport Police said in a statement. “Geza Tarjanyi, from Leyland, is charged with common assault and two public order offences. He’s been released on bail to appear in court next month.”

The politician-turned-I’m A Celebrity-constant is believed to have been unharmed following the reported attack which took place on Tuesday (Jan. 24) at Westminster station before continuing on a Tube train. The second public order offence relating to the MP for West Suffolk is alleged to have taken place on January 19 near Parliament Street.

In a video shared online, Tarjanyi repeatedly calls Hancock a “murderer” and a “fraud”, attacking the MP’s handling the Coronavirus pandemic. Hancock, who appeared to be pushed by the man when at the top of an escalator, told someone sitting next to him: “I don’t think this aggression is appropriate.”

Describing the incident as an “unpleasant encounter”, a spokesman for the independent MP said: “Both Transport for London staff and the British Transport Police were fantastic… Matt wants to put on record his thanks to TFL and the British Transport Police for their extraordinary work,” adding that, “this sort of behaviour is a rare occurrence.” The spokesperson also pointed out how important it is to combat “baseless misinformation which causes so much harm.”

Matt Hancock was stripped of his seat after his stint on I’m A Celeb…, and has since said he will not contest his seat at the next election when he will step down.
