Coca-Cola has scrapped its iconic tropical soft drinks brand Lilt after almost 50 years.

As of today (Feb. 14), the drink—which first launched in 1975—will be known as ‘Fanta Pineapple & Grapefruit’. The new iteration will retain Lilt’s original formula and will be sold in 330ml cans, 500ml bottles, and two-litre bottles.

Lilt was previously sold solely in the UK, Ireland, Gibraltar and the Seychelles, but the new iteration will be available in many other markets.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners said of the change: “Keen Lilt fans may have spotted a gradual transition as the drink has made its way into the Fanta family over the past few months, with changes to its packaging and logo. Some have even hypothesised on social media that Lilt may be becoming part of the Fanta brand, and one even went as far as producing their own news broadcast-style video.”

The firm’s GB vice-president of commercial development, Martin Attock, told The Grocer: “Our main priority with this announcement is to reassure Lilt’s loyal fanbase that absolutely nothing has changed when it comes to the iconic taste of the drink they know and love. It’s still bursting with tangy tropical flavours. It’s just got itself a new name.”

Known for its “totally tropical taste”, the tangy drink quickly rose to become a household name in the late 1980s following its “Lilt Man” TV ad and iconic “Lilt Ladies”, played by Hazel and Blanche.

Farewell, Lilt. Thanks for the good times.
