Man In North York In Critical Condition After Being Shot By Police

A 31-year-old man in North York, Ontario is facing life-threatening injuries after police in shot him for allegedly brandishing a knife while walking his dog and then threatening another man.

The shooting occurred at the northeast corner of Black Creek Drive and Trethewey Drive shortly before 8 a.m.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) explained that police first interacted with the man before two officers fired their Tasers at him. Following that, a third officer shot the man, who was then taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“I do understand that there was a short foot pursuit and it went from the park and then into an intersection nearby,” said Kristy Denette, SIU spokesperson, to reporters on Monday afternoon. “I’m not clear if the affected person did make any motions with the knife but I do know there was a knife recovered. As to the nature of that exact interaction between police and the man, that is under investigation.”

The SIU assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

No other injuries were reported during this incident.

“We are asking anyone that was within the park or the vicinity to make themselves available to investigators,” said Insp. Suzanne Redman during a brief press conference on Monday morning, according to CTV News.
