Google PlayA variety of Ghostface sightings have terrorized people across the U.S. However, it appears there is no cause for alarm.
According to Variety, the recent trend is part of a marketing campaign for Scream VI, the impending installment in the beloved horror franchise. The film’s knife-wielding protagonist Ghostface has reportedly been seen in at least three different cities: New Orleans, St. Louis, and Sonoma, California, where a portion of 1996’s original Scream was shot.
A person dressed as the iconic villain was seen standing at a street corner outside Sonoma Plaza. The stunt was apparently so disturbing that some residents felt it necessary to call the authorities. The Sonoma Police Department addressed the concerns in a Feb. 27 Facebook post, reassuring the community there was nothing to worry about.
“This morning our dispatch center received multiple calls for service regarding an individual standing at 1st St. E/E Napa St. wearing a SCREAM costume,” the department wrote. “This individual has been contacted and was hired by a company through Paramount to promote the new SCREAM movie. Thank you for everyone’s concern, it’s been addressed.”
A source close to the film confirmed to Variety that the sightings were orchestrated by the Scream VI team. The report was further supported by activity on Ghostface’s official Twitter account, which included cheeky replies to the recent sightings.
Scream VI was co-directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Jenna Ortega stars again, accompanied by a cast that includes Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Samara Weaving, and Courteney Cox. The latter is the only original cast member to appear in the sequel, which will hit theaters March 10.
