Mighty Ducks alum Shaun Weiss, who in January celebrated two years of sobriety, has been cast in an upcoming film from Lionsgate titled Jesus Revolution.

Weiss first teased his role in a recent Instagram post, noting that the part marks his first “in…a while.” In the same post, seen below, the actor thanked Lionsgate and director Jon Erwin.

In a subsequent report from TMZ, Weiss provided fans with a little more insight on his involvement with the Christianity-centered film, which follows similarly focused projects from the director (alongside his brother Andrew Erwin) including I Still Believe and I Can Only Imagine.

According to Weiss, someone at Lionsgate came across his aforementioned sobriety journey, which inspired them to reach out about the role. Following a read conducted over Zoom, Weiss is said to have secured the part, which sees the actor playing a war veteran struggling with addiction.

Jesus Revolution, which centers on real-life figure Lonnie Frisbee, was previously reported by Deadline to also feature Kelsey Grammer in the role of Pastor Chuck Smith. The real-life Smith died from lung cancer at the age of 86 in 2013. Frisbee, who’s portrayed in the film by Jonathan Roumie, died in 1993 from due to complications from AIDS. Many within the evangelical community were quick to ostracize or even downright discredit Frisbee’s work, a facet of the “Jesus movement” figure’s life that was explored in the 2005 documentary The Life and Death of a Hippie Preacher.

More information on Weiss’ part in the film, meanwhile, has not been made public. When commemorating two years of sobriety earlier this year, the actor thanked fans for their ongoing support. When sharing a side-by-side showing his journey thus far, Weiss included a message stating the personal importance of taking “12 amazing steps.”
