In a video shared on his Twitter, O.J. Simpson has weighed in on the Alex Murdaugh murder trial, which landed the ex-lawyer two life sentences on Friday morning.

“A whole lot of people asking me what I think of this Alex Murdaugh trial, I don’t know why they think I’m an expert,” he said in a video posted on Thursday, which came ahead of Murdaugh’s conviction for the murder of his wife and son. “I gotta admit, when he took the stand—a guy who’s a habitual liar—I did watch. … I watched him take the stand and I thought it was probably a mistake because the guy is an admitted liar. And it’s hard for me to think he could be on the stand five, six, seven, eight days without lying. Of course, then there’s what did he lie about? But lying and stealing money is a little different than murder.”

He said he noticed Murdaugh was attempting to “relate to one or two of those jurors that he was a good ol’ boy,” but he ultimately “didn’t succeed in doing that.” Simpson said that he’s “not qualified” to speak on whether Murdaugh is or isn’t guilty, but he knows where he stands. “I do think this guy more than likely did it,” he said. “But once again, ‘more than likely’—to me—is tantamount to reasonable doubt.”

In a video shared after news broke of the guilty verdict, Simpson compared the case to his own murder trial in 1994 to 1995 over the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

“One thing that I was told by the lieutenant of the sheriff’s department when I was incarcerated in one of my cases: after the police officers had testified in my case, all of the sheriff’s department…they said, ‘You’re going home,’” he recalled. The former NFL star said the officers told him he’d be a free man because the jurors in the case saw the police officers lie during their testimony against him, and they must’ve seen that Murdaugh was a liar, too.”

He continued, “Well, that seemed to be the case here with Murdaugh. One thing that the jury must have seen is that the guy is a liar. And once a guy’s a liar, you can’t believe anything he says. … Down goes Murdaugh.”

Simpson’s comments on the trial come as a panel of 12 jurors reached a verdict on the case on Thursday, following a six-week trial that saw over 70 witnesses give testimonies. Murdaugh was found guilty of two counts of murder, and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was accused of fatally shooting his 22-year-old son Paul, and his 52-year-old wife Maggie in South Carolina in June 2021. Prosecutors suspect he committed the murder to distract from his ongoing financial scandals.

In Simpson’s highly publicized murder trials, he was acquitted of the killings of his ex-wife and her friend in ’95, but found liable for both deaths in a ’97 civil lawsuit.
